Honoring Dr. Mark Schiller: A Lifetime of Innovation, Leadership, and Compassion in Mental Health Care

The Miracles Tribute Award honors professionals whose lifetime achievements and outstanding service have shaped the treatment of substance use and mental health disorders. This year, we were proud to see our founder, Dr. Mark Schiller, honored with this prestigious tribute.

With over 30 years of experience, Dr. Mark Schiller is a respected psychiatrist specializing in complex mental health and substance use disorders, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and addiction. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, completed his psychiatry residency at Yale University, and held a research fellowship at UCSF, where he later served as an Associate Clinical Professor.

Dr. Schiller founded Mind Therapy Clinic to provide a coordinated, multidisciplinary model of care that could meet patients where they were — and stay with them over time. What began as an idea has grown into a thriving clinic with more than 30 psychiatrists and therapists, offering coordinated care across multiple levels of treatment.

At the Miracles Breakfast, colleagues, mentees, and friends whose professional lives have been deeply influenced by Dr. Schiller consistently described him as a clinician willing to challenge convention, explore emerging treatments, and share his knowledge openly in service of both patients and the broader mental health community. Many spoke not only to his clinical skill, but also to his generosity as a mentor, leader, and collaborator — someone who builds people up and empowers them to do their best work.

In accepting the award, Dr. Schiller spoke candidly and humbly about what he views as his greatest accomplishments. He emphasized two things above all else: the creation of Mind Therapy Clinic as a truly integrated model of care, and the remarkable people who have brought that vision to life. He expressed deep gratitude for the clinicians, leadership, and administrative staff — acknowledging that it is their daily work, dedication, and perseverance that transformed a framework into a living, effective system of care. He highlighted the contributions of current and former clinical leaders, program directors, fellows, and supervisors who helped develop the clinic’s emphasis on family involvement, integrated treatment, and long-term continuity of care.

Sharing a powerful example of a young patient who, through years of consistent, coordinated care, gradually returned to school, gained independence, and ultimately completed her degree, Dr. Schiller noted that stories like this reflect the heart of the clinic’s mission and the impact of sustained, team-based treatment.

In closing, Dr. Schiller emphasized that while he was honored to receive the Miracles Tribute Award, he accepts it on behalf of the staff — past and present — whose dedication has shaped the clinic and touched countless lives. We are incredibly proud of Dr. Schiller and grateful for the leadership, vision, and compassion he brings to Mind Therapy Clinic and the communities we serve.
