EmotionFocused therapy (EFT) is a therapeutic approach based on the premise that emotions are key to identity and can be used to guide a healthy, meaningful life. This two hour overview will examine EFT’s philosophy and general theory, exploration of EFT’s guiding principles and experience in basic EFT techniques and interventions. We’ll identify the skills to help clients develop emotional awareness, acceptance, and an understanding that avoidance of unpleasant emotions can cause harm and render us unable to use the important information emotions provide. EFT is an evidence based treatment model for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, borderline personality disorder and childhood abuse and neglect, as well as with couples in distress.

Objectives:

  • State EFT’s philosophy and general theory
  • Describe the guiding therapeutic principles of EFT
  • Practice basic emotion-focused techniques and interventions
