Intergenerational Narratives: Working with Trauma and Resiliency Within Identity
Jennifer Chen Speckman, LCSW has practiced clinically with children and their families for more than 18 years. She served on the PCH clinical team and headed clinical programs for 10 years. Attachment concepts centering around the biological and emotional need for relationships inform all her work. Her passion centers on creating healing interpersonal connections whether in strengthening communities, therapeutic individual, family, and couples treatment, and parenting support. She has served as faculty for MSW studies at universities such as UCLA, LMU, and USC. She holds a private practice in Berkeley where she sees children, parents, couples, families, and individuals.

In somatic-based and attachment-based trauma treatment models, it’s understood that a person exists as a collection of their interpersonal experiences and how these experiences create a complex sense of personhood. We, as people, also exist within a complex network of historically based realities which prioritize certain individuals over others, often based on aspects such as race.
Therapeutic work within these legacies can be complex and risky. This presentation offers an opportunity to explore the context of the client and clinician within historical context. Issues such as intergenerational trauma, critical race theory, and attachment theory will scaffold the conversation using case studies.
Attendees at this presentation will be able to:
• Describe the fundamental approaches to generational trauma and resiliency models
• Utilize the tenants of Critical Race Theory that can be applied in psychodynamic models
• Discuss case examples of racial enactments
