Matt Blagys, PhD

Clinical Director and Psychologist

While earning his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Arkansas, Dr. Blagys published and presented research on psychotherapy processes and outcomes.  He then completed his internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School where he continued to hone his clinical skills and publish research.  To round out his training, he completed a prestigious four-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Austen Riggs Center, a nationally recognized residential treatment center specializing in working with clients labeled as ‘treatment resistant’–individuals experiencing highly complex psychiatric or substance abuse problems and chronic suicidal ideation that have struggled to benefit from traditional mental health or substance abuse treatment.

Dr. Blagys has worked in several mental health, addiction, and residential treatment centers including as Primary Therapist and Admissions Director at the Boyer House; Staff Psychologist, Co-Chair Psychology Department Co-Chairman, and Internship Supervisor at Napa State Hospital; and Clinical Director of Alta Mira Recovery and Reflections drug and alcohol residential centers in Marin County, CA.

His current clinical interests include individual therapy focused on addiction recovery, depression, and relationship issues as well as family and couples therapy.

In his free time, Dr. Blagys enjoys spending time with his family and children, playing sports (especially basketball-Go DUBS!), and hiking with his dog Chewbarka (Chewy).

“My treatment approach and philosophy balances the exploration of underlying patterns and behaviors that affect current functioning with pragmatic and solution-oriented problem-solving.  In my clinical work, I believe in the centrality of the relationship between the client and therapist for understanding problems and identifying solutions and values a client’s autonomy and authority for their treatment.  I work collaboratively with clients to identify treatment goals and priorities and develop customized treatment plans to address individual needs.”
